Police in Phalombe have arrested a 26-year-old man for allegedly hacking to death his uncle over a land dispute.

Phalombe Police Station spokesperson Augustus Nkhwazi said in a statement on Monday the deceased, Damiano Matapwata (65) and his nephew, Edward Chenjema, went to their respective gardens last Friday in Traditional Authority Kaduya in the district.

Nkhwazi said as they were farming, the deceased, reportedly with an axe in his hand, allegedly left his garden and entered his nephew’s and started cutting down trees, something that annoyed the nephew who allegedly confronted Matapwata and seized the axe and hacked him in the head.

Nkhwazi said Matapwata was taken to Migowi Health Centre, but died after losing a lot of blood.
